Mind-boggling stats for 2017 Week 8
Alex Smith makes a case for MVP, the Cowboys are bouncing back and can Buffalo finally return to the playoffs? See what the numbers have to say with this week's mind-boggling stats.

The odds are stacked against Deshaun Watson. Rookie quarterbacks are 1-7 at Seattle in the Pete Carroll era (since 2010), and 3-42 against the #1 scoring defense (based on end of season rank) since the 1970 merger. Andy Dalton is the only QB to beat Pete Carroll in Seattle (Week 8, 2011), while Ryan Tannehill (2012), Billy Joe Toliver (1989), and Phil Simms (1979) are the only rookie QBs to beat a #1 scoring defense since the merger.

Alex Smith leads the NFL in completion percentage (72.4), yards per attempt (8.7), and passer rating (120.5) this season. Each of the last 3 times a player held a lead in those categories at the end of Week 7, he went on to win the MVP and make the Super Bowl that season (Kurt Warner in 1999 & 2001, Joe Montana in 1989).

After a sluggish start, the Cowboys offense seems to have rounded into form. Since Week 4, the Cowboys lead the NFL in total yards per game (449.7) and rushing yards per game (205.7). That is more yards per game and rushing yards per game than the Cowboys had in any three-game stretch last season.

In Weeks 1-6, Derek Carr had a 54.8 passer rating when targeting Amari Cooper for a total of 130 yards. In Week 7, Carr had a 131.5 rating when targeting Cooper, for 210 yards.

Antonio Brown leads the NFL in receiving by 220 yards (Brown 765, A.J. Green 545) this season. Only one player since the 1970 merger has held a larger lead at this point in the season: Michael Irvin, who led by 273 receiving yards after Week 7, 1993 over Andre Rison. Brown leads his next-closest teammate (Martavis Bryant) by 531 yards -- the biggest margin on any team since the merger.

With 1.0 sack, Joey Bosa can pass Aldon Smith for the most sacks by any player in their first 20 career games. Bosa has 18.0 sacks in his first 19 games, while Smith had 18.5 in his first 20 games.

The Dolphins are 13-4 in their last 17 games. The only teams with more wins in that span are the Patriots and Chiefs (15 apiece).

Everson Griffen has at least 1.0 sack in every game this season, making him the sixth player with a sack in each of his team's first seven games of a season since individual sacks have been tracked (since 1982). With a sack in Week 8 vs the Browns, Griffen would tie Dwight Freeney in 2009 and Robert Mathis in 2005 for the longest streak of games with a sack to begin a season (8).

Carson Wentz leads the NFL with 17 passing touchdowns this season, already surpassing his total of 16 (in 16 games) from his rookie season. Wentz would be the first Eagles QB since Roman Gabriel (23 pass TD in 1973) to lead the league in pass TD.

If the Bills keep winning the turnover battle, they are likely to end the longest playoff drought in major professional sports (17 seasons). Each of the last 19 teams (including ties) to lead the NFL in turnover differential made the playoffs, dating back to the 1999 Chiefs (missed playoffs at 9-7).
