Mind-boggling stats for 2019 Week 8
Most everything about the Patriots is mind-boggling these days. New England currently leads the league in scoring offense (31.9 PPG) and scoring defense (6.9 PPG allowed), a feat only accomplished twice in a full season since the 1970 NFL merger. Aaron Rodgers is back on his A game with the only QB in the NFL with 6+ wins and a 100+ passer rating this season and Michael Thomas and the Saints haven't slowed down despite losing all-time passing leader Drew Brees in Week 2. See what the numbers have to say with these mind-boggling stats for Week 8.

Kyle Allen and Jimmy Garoppolo have a lot in common. They are both leading teams on active win streaks of at least 4 games; they are both undefeated as starters this season; they both won their first 5 starts; and to boot, they have the 2 highest win percentages in the Super Bowl era among QBs with 5+ starts (Allen - 1.000 win pct, Garoppolo - .875 win pct). Week 8 will mark the first matchup since at least 1950 of opposing QBs with a career win percentage of .850 or better (min. 5 starts each. Panthers RB Christian McCaffrey leads the NFL in scrimmage YPG (153.8) and touches per game (27.0) this season, while the 49ers RB group (featuring the trio of Matt Breida, Raheem Mostert and Tevin Coleman) leads all teams in rush YPG (160.8), scrimmage YPG (205.2) and touches per game (38.2) this season. McCaffrey is also tied for the NFL lead with 9 scrimmage TD entering Week 8. San Francisco is 1 of 2 teams (New England) to not allow a scrimmage TD to a running back in 2019.

Most everything about the Patriots is mind-boggling these days, but here are a couple especially impressive notes. New England currently leads the league in scoring offense (31.9 PPG) and scoring defense (6.9 PPG allowed), a feat only accomplished twice in a full season since the 1970 NFL merger. Both teams to do it won the Super Bowl, including the 1996 Packers and ... the 1972 Dolphins, the only team to go undefeated all the way through the Super Bowl. Oh, and that Patriots defensive unit has scored more points when on the field this season (20) than it has allowed to opposing offenses (18).
The Patriots have used man coverage at the highest rate in the league this season (63.5 pct). New England has also been the best pass defense when in man coverage. The Patriots lead the NFL with 11 INT in man coverage, 5 more than any other team this season. New England's 36.3 passer rating allowed in man coverage is the lowest through Week 7 since 2014.

If it feels like the Texans play a nail-biter just about every week, you might be onto something. Of the Texans' 7 games this season, 6 have resulted in one-possession games, tied with the Colts and Chargers for the most in the NFL. The Texans have gone 3-3 in such games. For Deshaun Watson, the trend goes beyond the 2019 season. Of Watson's 29 career starts, 21 have been one- possession games (72.4 pct), the 2nd-highest rate among QBs with 20+ starts since 1950. Each of Watson's 11 career regular season losses have come by one possession, and no other QB with 10+ career losses since 1950 has even had 85 pct of them come in such a manner. If Watson's next loss comes by 8 or fewer points, he will break a 4-way tie with Tom Brady, Charlie Batch and Joe Flacco for the longest streak of one-possession losses since 1950.

While one former MVP quarterback will miss the Super Bowl I rematch in Week 8, the other former MVP QB appears to be back on his A game in 2019. Aaron Rodgers is the only QB in the NFL with 6+ wins and a 100+ passer rating this season. Rodgers has averaged 343.0 passing yards per game since Week 4, most in the NFL in that span. The Packers have averaged 31.5 PPG over those last 4 games, 2nd-most in the NFL since Week 4.

If you think Russell Wilson's MVP momentum was slowed after his 65.2 passer rating in Week 7, think again. Of the last 5 QBs to win MVP, 4 had at least 1 game in their MVP season with a passer rating below 70.0, the only exception being Wilson's Week 8 counterpart, Matt Ryan, in 2016. Wilson can bounce back this week against a Falcons defense that has allowed 17 pass touchdowns (T- most) and a 116.3 passer rating (31st) to opposing passers this season.

The Bills are 5-1 this season, their best start through 6 games since 2008, but a deeper look at the numbers suggests they might be in trouble. Among the 14 teams with a winning record in 2019, the Bills rank dead last in scoring offense (20.2 PPG), 3rd down pct (33.3 pct) and passer rating (78.3). Only 6 teams this decade have finished the season with a winning record despite scoring 20.2 or fewer points per game, and those 6 teams combined to go 1-5 in postseason play (the 2018 Titans missed the playoffs entirely). But if there's any opportunity for the Bills' passing attack to get on track, it might be this weekend against the Eagles' 27th-ranked passing defense.

This Sunday, Ryan Tannehill will become the 4th QB to start a game against the Buccaneers after beginning the season as the backup. Unfortunately for Tampa Bay, they have had trouble stopping these "second-stringers." The previous 3 backups to face the Bucs, Daniel Jones, Teddy Bridgewater and Kyle Allen, combined to go 3-0 with 8 pass TD, 1 INT and a 116.3 passer rating in those games.

Jacoby Brissett has a 101.0 passer rating on 206 pass attempts this season. He is the first Colts QB with a 100+ passer rating in a season with at least 200 pass attempts since Peyton Manning (101.0) in 2006. The 2006 Colts went on to win Super Bowl XLI.

Michael Thomas and the Saints haven't slowed down despite losing all-time passing leader Drew Brees in Week 2. The Saints have won 5 straight and Thomas leads the NFL in both receptions (62) and receiving yards (763), something no Saints wide receiver has ever done over a full season. As for who is throwing the ball to Thomas, it hasn't seemed to matter. In his 23 games since 2018, Thomas has caught 7.71 passes per game from Brees ... and 7.71 passes per game from Teddy Bridgewater. No matter who the QB is, defenses apparently can't guard Mike.
