Mind-boggling stats for 2019 Week 9
We've got an exciting week ahead of us! Kyler Murray kicks off TNF against the 49ers. It will be the 20th instance of a rookie QB drafted 1st overall facing a team entering the game with a top 2 scoring defense since the NFL merger. On Sunday, we can look forward to the meeting between Lamar Jackson and Bill Belichick's defense. The only 2 teams in the NFL averaging more than 30.0 points per game this season will both be on the field in a highly anticipated Sunday Night showdown. See what the numbers have to say with these mind-boggling stats for Week 9.

When Kyler Murray plays the 49ers on TNF, it will be the 20th instance of a rookie QB drafted 1st overall facing a team entering the game with a top 2 scoring defense since the NFL merger (49ers are allowing 11.0 PPG, 2nd in NFL). History says it will be a spooky Halloween for Murray. The rookies are 2-17 with 143.3 pass YPG, 15 pass TD, 25 INT and a 57.5 passer rating. The last QB to win in such a meeting was Browns QB Tim Couch back in Week 10, 1999 against the Steelers. Kyler Murray has been pressured on 11.9 pct of his dropbacks this season, the lowest rate in the NFL. Murray's been able to avoid pressure by getting the ball out quickly (55.1 quick pass percentage, 2nd-highest in NFL). The 49ers defense has 3 pass rushers ranking in the top 20 in disruption rate this season, min. 100 pass rushes (Nick Bosa 23.2, 1st; Dee Ford 15.5, 11th; Arik Armstead 14.3, 18th).

Aaron Rodgers and Philip Rivers don't meet very often, but when they do, you can expect fireworks. Only Hall of Famer Kurt Warner (140.9) has a higher passer rating against the Chargers than Rodgers (132.5) in the Super Bowl era (min. 2 starts at QB). Meanwhile, Rivers has 444.0 pass YPG in matchups against Rodgers, the 2nd-highest mark in a QB rivalry since 1950, behind HOF Joe Namath's 446.5 pass YPG against HOF Johnny Unitas (min. 2 starts).

You might not see 2018 NFL MVP Patrick Mahomes on the field in this game, but you will see his 2019 doppelganger, Kirk Cousins. Not only is Cousins' 115.2 passer rating a couple ticks higher than Mahomes' 113.1 this season, it's eerily similar to Mahomes' 115.3 rating through 8 games last season. Cousins is also 6-2 with 9.3 yards per attempt in 2019, while Mahomes was 7-1 with 8.9 yards per attempt through the 1st half of his MVP campaign.

Russell Wilson has surely been the Seahawks MVP through the 1st half of the season, but he's also making a resounding case for league MVP. With his league-leading 17 passing touchdowns and 115.5 passer rating, Wilson is on pace to join some rare company. No player has led the league outright in passing touchdowns and passer rating since Tom Brady in 2010, and of the last 8 players to do so, 6 won MVP (Brady twice, Kurt Warner twice, Peyton Manning and Steve Young).

Gardner Minshew has taken the NFL by storm. His 13-2 TD-INT ratio trails only a Super Bowl champion (Russell Wilson, 17-1), an MVP (Patrick Mahomes, 15-1) and a guy that's both (Aaron Rodgers, 16-2). His 98.8 passer rating is the 4th-highest by a rookie in a season in the Super Bowl era, and the 3 QBs above him all led their teams to the playoffs. Minshew can also become the 3rd rookie QB to win an international game in NFL history, joining Russell Wilson and Mark Sanchez, who not only captured victories abroad as rookies, but also captured victories in the playoffs as rookies.

The Cowboys offense is averaging a league-leading 437.9 total yards per game this season, which would be the highest mark in a season in franchise history. Finishing a season 1st in total offense is a feat the Cowboys have accomplished only 3 times since the 1970 merger -- and in 2 of those 3 seasons, 1971 and 1977, their #1 offense helped lead them to a Super Bowl title. It certainly doesn't hurt that Dak Prescott has a 70.6 comp pct and is passing for 303.3 yards per game, putting him on pace to finish the season with a 70.0+ comp pct and 300+ pass YPG --something only Drew Brees (in 2011) has accomplished in NFL history.
