NFL photographers' favorite images
As the 2018 NFL season kicks off this week, NFL photographers reflect on their favorite football photos they have taken over the years. Be it a 1986 shot of a Sweetness touchdown or Tom Brady wistfully congratulating Chris Long after Super Bowl LII, plenty of NFL history has been captured by these photographers.

"Often it is not about the action, but the reaction, especially in the Super Bowl. Shooting a lot of games in Green Bay, it is a known rule that on any touchdown, if you are not able to see the score, watch for former Packers quarterback Brett Favre."

"In college I photographed for United Press International. Being that I was the most junior member, I was often given one, maybe two rolls of film, so 72 photos for a game, which is unheard of in today's world. But this was in 1986 when the Chicago Bears were playing the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field. This is a 2-yard touchdown run. To be that close to Sweetness, this is football."

"Mud and Rain, not snow… I just love how the Turf stayed on San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Jerry Rice's helmet."

"This was during the last game of the season against the Minnesota Vikings. The Green Bay Packers had a solid lead and the light dropped to a point where I decided to play with longer exposures."

"The Carolina Panthers did not win, but they did start strong during Super Bowl 50. I was in a great spot as Panthers running back Jonathan Stewart leaped over the pile … As he took off, I just knew I had something special."

"This is probably one of my favorite photos I have taken for the NFL simply because it helped me win this year's action category at the 50th Annual Pro Football Hall of Fame Photo Contest. It was taken during the same game that Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Julio Jones went straight beast mode with 12 receptions for 253 yards and two touchdowns in the Falcons' victory against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in week 12 of the NFL season."

"It is crazy to think that this would have been the game winning touchdown if the New England Patriots could have held on in Super Bowl LII. Shooting from above always seemed like it would be so easy, but half way through the game I realized it was far from it. I was wedged between multiple intoxicated Patriots fans way up in the nosebleed seats, leaning on a railing overlooking the game, making it one of the most challenging games I have shot."

"In my opinion, Jacksonville Jaguars Jalen Ramsey is the best cornerback in the league. On this play he was lined up one-on-one against his ex-college teammate, Buffalo Bills wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin. A fade route was over thrown during the previous play, but they went back at him again. This time, Benjamin pushed off and was called for an offensive pass interference. Even with the push off, Ramsey was strong enough to knock the ball down, showing Benjamin who the real king was that day."

"There is really nothing particularly special about this photo, save that it is American football inside a stadium that is the kingdom of the other type of football in Mexico. I grew up a huge soccer fan and the Estadio Azteca has always been an intimidating venue for visiting teams, especially the United States men's national soccer team. The Estadio Azteca is where both the 'Hand of God goal' and the 'Goal of the Century' occurred; shooting American football there is one of those moments I will tell my kids about."

"A week or so before Super Bowl LII, there was a story about Julie Ertz, an American soccer player and FIFA Women's World Cup champion, crying during a post-game interview after she learned that her husband, Philadelphia Eagles tight end Zach Ertz, had won the NFC Championship game and would be heading to the Super Bowl. Fast forward two weeks later and her husband was a Super Bowl Champion. I saw her trying to get her husband's attention in the chaos that is the post and knew I had to stay with her in case they embraced. This was the outcome. Two world champions in their respective sports just living in the moment."

"This may be my all-time favorite photo for the National Football League because it was my first game working for the NFL. I was not shooting the game, but was a runner and photo editor for Ben Liebenberg, Director of Photography for the NFL, and team. I had a small camera around my neck and took a few photos while waiting for cards. After the game, it is extremely hard to find your photographers on the field because they all wear the same bibs. While looking for Ben, then Pittsburgh Steelers offensive guard Willie Colon starting walking toward me and I thought he was going to kill me because he is so big. I grabbed my camera and snapped a few frames of him flexing and yelling after winning the Super Bowl for the first time."

"This photo was taken during the first preseason game in the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium. I went upstairs to get some general view shots and noticed this light hitting the field. As luck would have it, this tiny pocket of light appeared as Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald was warming up to create a long shadow of him upfield."

"This year, my postgame assignment was to capture the quarterbacks. Normally there is a huge group of photographers swarming New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, but I was the first guy out there and was able to capture Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Chris Long hugging Brady after the loss. I love the history of this photo more than anything, knowing that they had both won the Super Bowl in Houston the prior year."

"This image was taken during the 2018 CFB National Championship between Georgia and Alabama. Players were running everywhere, and I love the pure, raw emotion of this player celebrating after Alabama scored in overtime to win the game."

"It looks like his back is on fire! This is what I call a 'lucky' image. When I cover a game, I watch players during introductions, warm ups, etc. and I take notice of their mannerisms. When then Carolina Panthers running back Jonathan Stewart is introduced during player introductions, he will jump like this photo. I thought I would try a different angle for this game and was able to capture him between the fireballs and the heat waves."

"This image is of Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck during the AFC Championship in Foxborough, Mass. Luck just threw an interception and walked to the sideline and threw his head back in frustration. I just like the emotion along with the rain falling and covering his helmet."

"I could look at this picture of Carolina Panthers linebackers Luuuke Kuechly and Thomas Davis all day. Being able to see them running off the field in sync with each other was really cool."

"The quarterback and the coach. It was incredible to see New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady celebrate while Patriots head coach Bill Belichick stood in the background smiling and clapping after winning Super Bowl LI."

"I was able to get permission with the help of my NFL.com editor and the Los Angeles Chargers to go on the roof of the StubHub Center. I knew I wanted to go just before the end of the 2nd quarter when the light would create the most dramatic look. I originally shot the image horizontal with a 600mm and later cropped it vertically to focus on the action."

"I wanted to show the audience a unique angle and perspective and thus the 'Coin Flip Cam' was born. Using an 8mm circular fish-eye lens creates the circle vignette on the image and the Mercedes-Benz Superdome is also circular, amplifying this effect. Immediately after the NFL posted the image it was on Reddit and receiving comments of users guessing how I achieved the image."

"AT&T Stadium aka Jerry's World is my favorite stadium in the NFL. I remember the first time I was on the field and how I was in awe of it. For a limited number of games in the fall, the light comes through the windows just right to create epic sun rays. It was fitting that the GOAT New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady is front and center."

"This was my first image to be honored by the Annual Pro Football Hall of Fame Photo Contest for action photography. I shot this tight from the end zone with a 400mm lens. I like how you can see the effort Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Braylon Edwards made to make the catch while being double covered."

"For Super Bowl LI, I was assigned to an overhead position. Being above allows for a unique angle and for you to be able to photograph every play. When I was photographing the sequence of the New England Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman catch I could not believe what I saw through the camera. I looked at the back of the camera and knew I had captured the play of the game."

"The Legion of Boom. Or what it used to be. Everyone knows the pregame huddle with the Seattle Seahawks secondary, but this time it was a Thursday Night Football game against the Arizona Cardinals and the Seahawks were wearing their Color Rush uniforms. It is pretty tough to make Color Rush jerseys look good, let alone the Seahawks action green, but this was one of those instances where it worked. Luckily, the roof was open at the University of Phoenix Stadium, which added a nice detail to the image. That boom mic, on the other hand, was not so nice…"

"Fog-Gate 2017! For those of you who remember the Super Bowl LI rematch in Foxboro, Mass., a massive shroud of fog consumed the stadium during the game. It was really strange to behold. I wanted to show how weird everything looked so I went behind the line of scrimmage to get a view with the stadium signage. Not as exciting as the actual Super Bowl, but I came away with a neat image."

"This was my first game shooting in Seattle. One of the great things about shooting with the NFL is that we get special on-the-field access during pregame warm-ups. I had never shot with this kind of access before, so I wanted to test my limits. I got right up to Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson – pretty much directly under him – with a fish-eye and shot a few frames of him stretching before pulling away (you do not want to become a nuisance to the players or distract them from the game). He looked at the camera for a single frame with that sort of confident game face only Russell has. Fun fact: he posted this image to his Instagram account."

"Lasers! Who does not love a laser photo? This was my first time shooting in Philadelphia. I knew the Philadelphia Eagles utilized lasers in their player introductions, so I had this shot in my head and planned way before it actually happened. I got lucky with the tunnel light reflecting in then Eagles running back Blount's facemask; it looks like he is a cyclops. I absolutely love this image; it is clean and simple. Funny enough, Blount also posted this to his social media accounts. Bonus points for him being a former Oregon running back."

"I love my Ducks. I graduated from the University of Oregon a few years ago, so any opportunity I can get to shoot my alma mater I will. Unfortunately, this is not a great photo for the Oregon defense. I remember hanging out on the opposite end zone trying to decide if I should move downfield because UCLA was on the move. Luckily for me I made the right choice. On the second or third play after I moved, UCLA running back Bolu Olorunfunmi leapt over the Oregon defense, or rather stepped over, to score a touchdown. Great play and amazing moment, just not for my Ducks."

"Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown is quickly entering the conversation for the greatest wide receiver ever. This shot was from the AFC Divisional game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Jaguars' defense was amazing and cornerback AJ Bouye had not allowed a touchdown the entire season ... until this play. Brown burned Bouye to the end zone and made a great catch for the TD. It is a perfect 'Get off me' moment."

"The Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver's NFL draft pick tattoo. Tattoos are very personal to everyone for a number of reasons, I like this so much as a symbol of pride and accomplishment."

"Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt added this logo to his shirt during warmups and for the game following the tragedy that happened in Paris in 2015. To me its a nice gesture and shows that no matter who or how famous an athlete is, we are all people with the ability to show compassion."

"Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown preparing to take the field for offense set. A nice moment of preparation and concentration."

"New Orleans Saints running back Alvin Kamara showing off his grill. Really like this as a moment of fun. There to work, but can still keep it real."

"Cincinnati Bengals linebacker Vontaze Burfict changing the outcome of a Wild Card game for the Bengals. One of the most powerful game action photos I have ever taken. An entire season in one photo."
