Vinatieri's pro football career started in NFL Europe with the Amsterdam Admirals in 1996, and later that year he earned the Patriots' kicker spot. In 10 seasons in New England, Vinatieri earned a reputation as one of the game's most clutch kickers. In the Patriots' run to victory in Super Bowl XXXVI, Vinatieri made game-tying and winning kicks in the snow in a divisional playoff win over the Raiders, and then made the winning kick in the Super Bowl win over the Rams. Vinatieri has been on four Super Bowl-winning teams (three with the Patriots and one with the Colts), and is a member of the NFL's 2000s all-decade team.

He's been a part of two Broncos teams that advanced to the Super Bowl, including playing a vital role in the team's triumph in Super Bowl 50.

Grimes was signed by the Falcons, waived, re-signed and then allocated to NFL Europa to play for the Hamburg Sea Devils, whom he led to victory in the final World Bowl. He earned a roster spot with the Falcons as a special teamer in 2007. In six seasons with Atlanta, Grimes emerged as viable starting cornerback and earned a Pro Bowl nod in 2010. Grimes signed as a free agent with the Dolphins in 2013, and would be selected to the Pro Bowl in each of his three seasons in Miami. However, Grimes was released following the 2015 season and then signed by the Buccaneers.

While Rico Gathers -- the Cowboys' sixth-round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft -- aims to become the latest hoopster-to-gridiron hero, it was Gates who helped set the stage for the power forward-to-NFL tight end boom. Gates was a basketball star at Kent State, but worked out for NFL teams despite not playing football in college. The Chargers signed Gates, and he emerged as a starter in his first season. In 13 seasons in San Diego, Gates has posted 844 receptions for 10,644 yards and 104 touchdowns to be the Chargers' all-time leader in all three categories.

Harrison had quite a voyage en route to becoming one of the NFL's top linebackers. He was signed and released three times by the Pittsburgh Steelers, and then picked up in 2003 by the Baltimore Ravens, who sent him to NFL Europe to play for the Rhein Fire. Harrison was cut for a fourth time and then signed for a fourth time by the Steelers. In Pittsburgh, Harrison was a part of two Super Bowl-winning teams, and made one of the greatest plays in Super Bowl history with a 100-yard pick six against the Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII.

Peters originally went to Arkansas as a defensive lineman, but moved to tight end. His abilities as a blocker helped prompt a move to the offensive line when he hit the next level. Peters was picked up by the Bills, then released and eventually signed to the practice squad. Peters eventually made the active roster in 2004. Three seasons later, Peters became a regular in the Pro Bowl. Peters has earned eight Pro Bowl nods in his last nine seasons, including in 2015.

Romo has directed Dallas to the playoffs four times, and earned Pro Bowl selections in each of those seasons.
