The real fantasy football: Lord of the Rings meets the NFL
Lord of the Rings fans get the chance to return to Middle-earth once more, as The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey hits theaters this weekend. In honor of the release, we wanted to take the chance to reintroduce you to some of the best characters from the series, but with an NFL spin. Here are nine iconic characters from the The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, as well as their NFL equivalent for the 2012 season.

Going along with our awesome trailer mash-up, Russell Wilson would indeed be Bilbo Baggins. Plucked from relative obscurity, and forced into a leading role on an unlikely journey? The parallels between Wilson and Bilbo aren't hard to find. Not to mention they're both "undersized" for such a journey, according to some.

If Wilson is Bilbo, then unfortunately for Matt Flynn, that makes him Gollum. Flynn waited patiently for his precious (aka a starting gig in the NFL), only to have it taken away from him by the diminutive Wilson at the last possible moment. Now Flynn lurks in the shadows, waiting for his chance to reclaim what he believes is rightfully his…

Continuing the trend, Pete Carroll would have to be Gandalf, seeing as he was the one who chose Wilson to lead his team on the journey in the first place! While probably not as wise, or widely respected as Gandalf, at least for this season Carroll and his whispy white locks fit the bill.

A brash, pompous, at times over-confident leader of a rag-tag group of would-be heroes… that's almost too perfect of a fit for Tom Brady. Thorin's hubris and bravado occasionally lead him into trouble, which very well could be the case for Brady again this post-season.

Aragorn had been around the Middle-earth block so to speak, and it was his savvy and experience that helped guide the Fellowship of the Ring to the successful conclusion of their mission. Likewise, Manning is no stranger to the NFL, and is leading the Denver Broncos successfully on their quest to achieve Super Bowl glory, so far. We might just have another "Return of the King" on the horizon.

Legolas was a fluid warrior, who combined his elven athleticism with his pin-point aim with a bow and arrow to great effect on the battlefield. Aaron Rodgers has long used his legs and shiftiness to evade pressure in the pocket, while throwing passes with incredible accuracy downfield to drastic effects on opposing defenses.

Gimli, a dwarf, was a staunch warrior who formed an unlikely friendship with Legolas, helping overcome an ancient feud between Dwarves and Elves. For the Packers this season, Aaron Rodgers' unlikely friend is a resurgent running game, one he and coach Mike McCarthy have long ignored. Can Rodgers and the running backs form a bond that will carry the Packers deep into the playoffs?

In the Lord of the Rings, Frodo had the largest task in the land fall on his small shoulders – taking the One Ring to Mordor and destroying it. In the NFL, RGIII has been tasked with leading the much maligned Washington Redskins back from NFL obscurity, and into a powerhouse once again. No small task, that's for sure.

Thankfully for RGIII, much like Frodo, he's not alone in his journey. Samwise Gamgee went from gardener to unlikely warrior, and was tasked with protecting Frodo, even as Frodo succumbed to the wicked powers of the ring. Alfred Morris on the other hand, went from sixth round pick to featured back in the Redskins revamped offense. With RGIII injured, it will be up to Morris to carry the team up the hill, and into the playoffs.
