Top 10 Games in Cowboys Redskins Rivalry
Top 10 Games in Cowboys Redskins Rivalry

The list of the top 10 games in the Cowboys-Redskins includes the dramatic and the quirky. Call it historically quirky. The 1987 Players Strike affected every team, but unlike other clubs, the Redskins didn't have a single guy cross the picket line to play with the replacement players. So the fact that they went 3-0 with a hastily-cobbled-together group of "athletes," including a 13-7 win over Dallas in October, was remarkable especially when you consider that several Dallas veterans, including Danny White and Ed "Too Tall" Jones, had rejoined the organization. Even with Pro Bowl players in tow, the Cowboys couldn't beat a group of truck drivers, carpenters, and dudes more likely to work at Medieval Times than in the NFL. (AP Photo/Dennis Cook)

The '72 NFC Championship was not much of a contest. What was at stake is what made No. 9 on the list special. This would be the first time these rivals met in the playoffs, not to mention the fact that the winner would get a chance to ruin the Miami Dolphins' perfect season. Redskins coach George Allen was no fan of Cowboys legend Tom Landry, so you could say there was a slight tinge of joy shared in the Redskins locker room after prevailing 26-3. (AP Photo)

Dallas had its chance for revenge just nine months later on a Monday night at RFK, but it was not to be. Hall of Fame safety Ken Houston made a clutch-as-it-gets tackle on Cowboys fullback Walt Garrison at the one-yard line to preserve a 14-7 win for the Redskins. In a game marred by missed field goals, the Redskins got a leg up in the NFC East race, but ultimately the division would go to the Cowboys on a tiebreaker. These clubs hated each other in the '70s, but Dallas usually came out on top, winning the NFC East seven times during the decade. (Pro Football Hall of Fame)

Norv Turner's '99 Redskins made the playoffs for the first time in seven seasons. Yet, that campaign got off to an inauspicious start. The Redskins blew a 35-14 fourth-quarter lead when Troy Aikman (362 yards, five TD, three INT) got hot. The Cowboys tied the score at 35 with 21 unanswered points, then a bobbled snap on the Redskins' game-winning field goal attempt (a problem that hurt the team in the playoffs that year) pushed the game to overtime. On third-and-2 from the Cowboys' 24-yard line, Aikman sucked the whole defense in on play-action, leaving Rocket Ismail open by a country mile; 76 yards later the Cowboys moved to 1-0 and the Redskins dropped to 0-1. Sixteen years before the Rocket donned the Cowboys' navy blues, Dallas wore the dreaded uniform for the "Monday Night Football" opener at RFK. Dreaded, because the Cowboys had lost in these road uniforms eight months prior to the same team in the same stadium in the NFC Championship game. Falling behind 23-3, the Cowboys rode two Danny White-to-Tony Hill bombs to 14 points ... just a portion of the 28 unanswered points they scored in the second half. This game is famous for more than the outcome. Howard Cosell came under fire for referring to the Redskins Alvin Garrett as "that little monkey" while Darrell Green might have made the best regular-season tackle in NFL history (see 55-second mark of this video). Seventeen years prior to the Cowboys' famous Monday night comeback, Dallas' greatest-ever 17 (apologies, Quincy Carter) threw for 406 yards on just 29 attempts, including driving the Cowboys 85 yards to a game-winning field goal attempt. Don Meredith accomplished all this with a punctured lung. Such was the toughness of the famous "Monday Night Football" broadcaster, who was a pretty darn good quarterback in his day. Shoot, such was the ferocity of the Cowboys-Redskins rivalry. It should be noted that Redskins QB Sonny Jurgenson threw for 347 yards and three touchdowns himself. All this, without the flag football rules in play today. (National Football League)

Anyone watching "Monday Night Football" seven years ago probably hasn't forgotten Mark Brunell bombing the Cowboys and their throwbacks into submission in a shocking 14-13 win. The catch here -- besides the 70- and 39-yard heaves Santana Moss caught -- was that Washington had accomplished nothing up until that point, gaining just 184 yards to trail 13-0. They were doing nothing, having punted seven times already. #Brunellhappens (AP Photo/L.M. Otero)

Perhaps the most famous Thanksgiving comeback in NFL history came courtesy of an even more unlikely quarterback than Mark Brunell. In 1974, Dallas dealt backup Craig Morton to the New York Giants, leaving rookie Clint Longley as the lone man on the depth chart behind Roger Staubach. That was pretty worrisome for both Cowboys fans as well as coach Tom Landry. Worry became reality when the Redskins knocked Staubach out of the game in the third quarter. Down 16-3, Dallas appeared done. So, all the kid from San Jose State did was throw for 203 yards and two touchdowns in leading the Pokes to a 24-23 win -- all in a quarter and a half of work. The biggest Redskins win in this intense rivalry has to be the 1982 NFC Championship. Symmetry: These two clubs met at RFK 10 years earlier for the right to go to the Super Bowl. Both times the Dolphins awaited the winner in the Super Bowl. Both times the Redskins won going away. However, Cowboys backup quarterback Gary Hogeboom gave the home crowd a scare, leading his team on two touchdown drives to bring the Cowboys within 21-17. It wouldn't be enough, as defensive tackle Darryl Grant intercepted Hogeboom, taking it 10 yards to the house to seal the deal. (AP Photo)

Arguably the greatest game in the history of these two teams is one of the most famous regular-season contests in NFL history. With the NFC East crown hanging in the balance, the Cowboys trailed the Redskins 34-21 with less than five minutes to play. Hall of Fame quarterback Roger Staubach took over, leading Dallas on two touchdown drives to win the division while knocking Washington out of the playoffs. It was to be Staubach's final regular-season game in Dallas after a brilliant 11-year career, and he rewarded a national-TV audience with 336 yards passing and three touchdowns, much of which came in the latter portion of the fourth quarter against the formidable Redskins.
