Three years before being usurped by Brett Favre to become the NFL's version of Wally Pipp, Don Majkowski led the Green Bay Packers on a thrilling run to a 10-6 finish. It was just the Packers' fifth winning season since the end of the Vince Lombardi era, and one of its highlights was a victory over the defending (and eventual) Super Bowl champion San Francisco 49ers at Candlestick Park. A rare January rainfall in Wisconsin turned the Lambeau Field surface into a sloppy mess for what would go down in Green Bay Packers lore as the Mud Bowl. Long punt returns by special teams maven Desmond Howard helped the Packers jump out to a 14-0 lead. A touchdown run by Edgar Bennett gave Green Bay a 21-0 lead in the second quarter and the rout was on. The importance of this game in the pantheon of Green Bay Packers victories cannot be understated. The San Francisco 49ers were defending Super Bowl champions, having dumptrucked the San Diego Chargers in Super Bowl XXIX. The Packers stood in the way of a fourth consecutive matchup between the 49ers and Dallas Cowboys in the NFC Championship Game. This game, however, vaulted the Packers among the elite. Green Bay's defense dominated San Francisco's high-octane offense, sacking Steve Young three times and picking him off twice. The 49ers' first offensive play from scrimmage set the tone for the Packers win, as Craig Newsome recovered a fumble and returned it for the game's opening score. For three consecutive seasons, the San Francisco 49ers' season ended against the Green Bay Packers at various levels of the NFC postseason. The Packers were coming off consecutive Super Bowl appearances and the 49ers had dropped five straight to Green Bay.
