Top five 49ers-Packers matchups
The Packers-49ers rivalry, which peaked in the mid '90s, is back in full force as Aaron Rodgers' crew travels to the Bay Area on Saturday. Have a look at the teams' best battles over the years.

There's nothing noteworthy about this matchup other than the famous photo that it produced. This shot of Hall of Famer Forrest Gregg of the Green Bay Packers is one of the NFL's all-time iconic weather images. Covered in mud on the Kezar Stadium sidelines, Gregg lets out a victory roar during a 13-0 late-season triumph. It was consecutive victory No. 2 in a three-game win streak that propelled the Packers to the NFL Championship Game in just their second season under coach Vince Lombardi. Three years before being usurped by Brett Favre to become the NFL's version of Wally Pipp, Don Majkowski led the Green Bay Packers on a thrilling run to a 10-6 finish. It was just the Packers' fifth winning season since the end of the Vince Lombardi era, and one of its highlights was a victory over the defending (and eventual) Super Bowl champion San Francisco 49ers at Candlestick Park. Majkowski rushed for a pair of touchdowns and threw for another in the victory. This was the 49ers' last loss of 1989, winning five consecutive games to close out the regular season and then going on a devastating run through the playoffs toward a 55-10 dismantling of the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXIV. A rare January rainfall in Wisconsin turned the Lambeau Field surface into a sloppy mess for what would go down in Green Bay Packers lore as the Mud Bowl. Long punt returns by special teams maven Desmond Howard helped the Packers jump out to a 14-0 lead. A touchdown run by Edgar Bennett gave Green Bay a 21-0 lead in the second quarter and the rout was on. The Packers advanced to the NFC Championship, in which they crushed the Carolina Panthers, 30-13, to advance to (and then win) their first Super Bowl in nearly three decades. The Green Bay Packers reached a second consecutive Super Bowl by defeating the San Francisco 49ers for a third straight time. The Packers dominated on a rainy afternoon at Candlestick Park, with Dorsey Levens putting the punctuation mark on the emphatic victory with a 5-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. Two weeks later as heavy favorites against the Denver Broncos, the Packers were defeated in Super Bowl XXXII. (Al Golub/Associated Press)

The importance of this game in the pantheon of Green Bay Packers victories cannot be understated. The San Francisco 49ers were defending Super Bowl champions, having dumptrucked the San Diego Chargers in Super Bowl XXIX. The Packers stood in the way of a fourth consecutive matchup between the 49ers and Dallas Cowboys in the NFC Championship Game. This game, however, vaulted the Packers among the elite. Green Bay's defense dominated San Francisco's high-octane offense, sacking Steve Young three times and picking him off twice. The 49ers' first offensive play from scrimmage set the tone for the Packers win, as Craig Newsome recovered a fumble and returned it for the game's opening score. This was the only time in the decade of the 1990s that an NFC team won a divisional playoff game on the road. (National Football League)

For three consecutive seasons, the San Francisco 49ers' season ended against the Green Bay Packers at various levels of the NFC postseason. The Packers were coming off consecutive Super Bowl appearances and the 49ers had dropped five straight to Green Bay. The game was set up as a classic grudge match, and the showdown turned into one of the NFL's all-time great playoff encounters. A back-and-forth struggle ended in redemption for Terrell Owens in one of the most amazing finishes in NFL postseason history. (Al Golub/Associated Press)
