Unexpected (and Expected) - Preseason WK 2
Week 2 of the NFL preseason brought some unexpected sights and sounds, and we can't wait for Week 3. But before we do that, let's take a look back at the weird, the wild and the unexplainable from this past weekend.

Many figured Jake Locker would be the Tennessee Titans' starter, but most figured it would come in Week 5 after a tough stretch of games early in the season. But the Titans decided the future is now and selected Locker as their starter. Fantasy alert: Get this guy on your bench.

Locker spent just a few moments at the top of the news cycle before the Miami Dolphins also named a new starting quarterback: Ryan Tannehill. The rookie has familiarity with offensive coordinator Mike Sherman's offense after their days together at Texas A&M, so it's of little surprise the Dolphins made the move.

Hard to say this was unexpected, but Shawne Merriman was released by the Buffalo Bills. It's hard to pinpoint the exact moment Merriman's career turned. I'd like to believe it was his run-in with WWE champion CM Punk. First Cena, and now Merriman. This has been a pretty good week for CM Punk.

The Arizona Cardinals have a quarterback competition going in name only. John Skelton figures to have the job all but locked up after he completed all three of his pass attempts -- including a touchdown pass to Anthony Sherman -- against the Oakland Raiders. Coach Ken Whisenhunt didn't want to jinx his quarterback and quickly removed him after his perfect performance.

Andy Luck has the Indianapolis Colts' quarterback job locked up, but there was a weird sequence when he slid at the goal line instead of punching it in (even though the referees mistakenly called it a touchdown). Not sure what Luck was thinking when he went for the slide there. Perhaps he was practicing for that moment when he's trying to kill the clock late in a game. Oh, those Stanford guys, always thinking.

And for the truly unexplained; Blaine Gabbert actually tore up the New Orleans Saints over the weekend. Seriously. Gabbert was 13-of-16 passing for 112 yards and two touchdowns, even while under duress from the Saints defense.

They say you haven't arrived as an NFL receiver until you've had a scrap with DeAngelo Hall. Actually, nobody says that, but it has some merit. Chicago Bears rookie Alshon Jeffery mixed it up with Hall, and drew a penalty. But the good news for Jeffery, who has excelled in training camp and could lock down a starting spot, is he's making the mistakes now.

Somebody might want to see if Michael Irvin has any interest in returning to the NFL, because the Dallas Cowboys' receiving corps is besieged by injuries. Miles Austin is out for the preseason, as is tight end Jason Witten. Dez Bryant and Andre Hall were both injured in practice Monday. And then there's Cole Beasley, who had an outstanding game with seven receptions for 104 yards. But all anybody wants to talk about is Beasley losing his lunch.

When compared to the New York Jets, the New York Giants have done a pretty good job of taking the high road when it comes to the circus antics. But when a video of Jason Pierre-Paul dumping Prince Amukamara in a cold water bucket goes viral, even a shirtless Tim Tebow thought that was over the top.

Eagles backup QB Nick Foles was rather impressive against the Patriots, as he went 18-of-27 for 217 yards and two touchdowns. That leads to one obvious question? How long before the Cardinals send Patrick Peterson and a pair of draft picks to Philadelphia for Foles?

Hope you didn't spend all of your hard-earned money to see Tom Brady play on "Monday Night Football." The New England Patriots' signal-caller (along with many other starters) were given the night off against the Philadelphia Eagles.
