Your father’s fantasy team
If you're spending some time with your dad this Father's Day, what better way to connect than discussing which players he might have drafted to his fantasy team? Imagine if fantasy was around, say, in the early 1960s when legendary Browns' running back Jim Brown was running rampant. We've compiled a list of players who might have led your dad's fantasy team to victory back in his day, whenever his day might have been. Don't forget to wish your old man a happy Father's Day this weekend.

Okay so maybe we're talking about your grandfather's fantasy team here. Hutson led the league in receiving in eight of his 11 seasons and led the league in scoring for five straight years. If your grandfather owned him during his best statistical season in 1942 he would have enjoyed 17 touchdown receptions and over 1,200 yards in just 11 games - that's good for an average of 110.1 yards per game.

In his nine seasons with the Chargers, Alworth averaged more than 50 receptions and 1,000 yards per season, and that's back when running backs were all the rage. He produced five seasons with double-digit touchdowns and more than 1,200 receiving yards. Your dad would have dominated on a weekly basis if he owned Alworth during his best season in 1965 when he led the league with 1,602 yards and 14 scores averaging an absurd 114.4 yards per game.

Just imagine what kind of astronomical salary your dad would have paid to own Rice in a dynasty league. The guy led the NFL in receiving yards and touchdown receptions six times in his long career, had a run of 11 straight 1,000-yard seasons and scored double-digit touchdowns in nine of 10 seasons from 1986 to 1995. Rice posted a monster year in 1995 with 122 receptions for 1,848 yards and 15 trips to the end zone. Other honorable mention seasons include his 1987 when he posted 22 touchdowns and 1,078 yards and 1989 when he scored 17 times and managed 1,483 yards. Not too shabby considering the most touchdowns scored by a wideout in 2015 was 14.

Your dad would have proclaimed himself a fantasy mastermind if he had drafted Dickerson in 1983. That season as a rookie, Dickerson totaled more than 2,200 yards from scrimmage and scored a ridiculous 20 touchdowns. He followed up with a sophomore campaign in which he he rushed for more than 2,100 yards and averaged an unearthly 131.6 rushing yards per game. Dickerson ended up becoming the first player in NFL history to gain more than 1,000 yards in seven straight seasons and the fastest running back to pile up 10,000 yards.

Arguably the best running back of all time despite his short yet explosive career, Brown was an all-around back. Over the course of his career he racked up 2,359 rushing attempts and 262 receptions for a total of 14,811 yards from scrimmage. He led the NFL in rushing in eight of his nine career seasons including a span of five straight. By his final season in the NFL, your dad and his league mates would have been bidding their entire fantasy auction budget on Brown. That year he scored 21 total touchdowns, recorded 1,544 rushing yards and piled up 328 receiving yards.

Beginning in 1991, Smith went on a run of 11 consecutive seasons with more than 1,000 rushing yards and won four rushing titles in a five-year span from 1991 to 1995. His best statistical season came in 1995 when he totaled 2,148 yards from scrimmage (1,773 rushing, 375 receiving) with 25 rushing touchdowns and averaged 110.8 rush yards per game.

Payton racked up 10 seasons with more than 1,200 rushing yards in his career along with seven seasons with double-digit touchdowns. He did a good amount of damage in the passing game as well with 492 career receptions for 4,538 yards and 15 touchdowns through the air. His best statistical campaign came in 1977 when he recorded 2,121 yards from scrimmage with 16 total touchdowns and averaged 5.5 yards per carry. Payton also notched 77 games in his career with more than 100 rushing yards.

Tarkenton's ability to run the ball would have made him a huge asset on your father's fantasy team. He rushed for more than 300 yards in seven of his first eight seasons and scored 20 rushing touchdowns in that span on top of his record-setting (at the time) passing stats. His best season from a fantasy perspective came in 1967 when he passed for 3,088 yards and 29 touchdowns while adding 306 rushing yards and two scores on the ground.

It's possible your father might have slept on Marino in fantasy during his unreal second season in the NFL. That year, the Dolphins signal caller threw 48 touchdown passes and became the first player ever to pass for 5,000 yards in a single season. In his career, Marino threw 420 touchdowns and passed for 3,000 yards or more in 13 seasons including six seasons where he reached the 4,000-yard mark.

Young won six passing titles in his time with the 49ers including a 1994 campaign where he posted 3,969 passing yards with 35 touchdowns and added seven rushing scores. Like some of the most high-scoring quarterbacks in fantasy today, Young used his ability to run to his advantage. He piled up more than 400 rushing yards three times in his career and totaled 4,239 rushing yards and 43 rushing TDs during his time in the NFL.

Gonzalez is quite possibly the greatest tight end of all time. He holds the record at his position for most receptions (1,325), most receiving yards (15,127) and most receiving touchdowns (111) and ranks among some of the top wide receivers in history in terms of his career numbers. He racked up 13 seasons with more than 800 receiving yards and broke the 1,000-yard mark four times. Your father would have received numerous trade offers for Gonzalez during his best fantasy season which came in 2004 when he posted 102 catches for 1,258 yards and seven touchdowns.

Beginning in 1993, Sharpe hauled in more than 60 receptions in every season until he retired, save for his 1999 campaign which was shortened by injury. He broke the 1,000-yard receiving mark three times and scored eight or more touchdowns in a season four times. His overall fantasy production through the years was somewhat up and down but if your father owned him in 1996 he would have enjoyed the lethal combination of 80 receptions for 1,062 yards and 10 touchdowns. In that case, your dad was likely winning at the tight end position every week.

Your father would have been quite the savvy fantasy owner if he drafted Winslow in 1980. That season, the second-year tight end recorded a career best 89 catches for 1,290 yards and nine touchdowns. For fortunate keeper league owners, Winslow followed up in 1981 with another 88 grabs for 1,075 yards and 10 scores. Although he was more productive at the beginning of his career, the Chargers' tight end remained a valuable asset until his retirement in 1987 with career totals of 541 receptions for 6,741 yards and 45 touchdowns.

One of the most notorious nicknames in NFL history, the Steelers' "Steel Curtain" defense was dominant in the 1970s. More specifically, if your father had rolled out the 1976 Steelers defensive unit in fantasy he would have watched them allow a grand total of just 28 points in their last nine games of the season. That unit led the NFL in total defense (237.4 yards per game allowed) and rushing (104.1 yards per game allowed). The team also had 22 interceptions that season.

Philadelphia built one of the best defensive units of all time in the early 1990s with their year of statistical dominance in 1991. That season, the Eagles defense ranked first in yards after the catch, rushing yards allowed, sacks, fumble recoveries and takeaways. In terms of fantasy, it doesn't get much better than that.

The Bears' defense ruled in the 1980s, but 1985 stood out. That year the unit ranked first in the NFL in points allowed per game (12.4), total points allowed in the season (198) and interceptions (34). Chicago tied for first with touchdowns scored (4), ranked third in sacks (64) and tallied more safeties than any other team (3). If your father used this unit as his starting fantasy defense, he would have been doing alright for himself.
