Kansas City Chiefs coach Todd Haley held out hope that Matt Cassel would be able to come back this season from a hand injury, but those hopes were dashed Monday when the team placed its quarterback on season-ending injured reserve, according to a team source.

The Chiefs are coming off their worst three-year stretch in franchise history. So far through camp and one preseason game, progress has been difficult to find.
