NFL Green Sustainability

Sustainability is a core focus for the NFL, and the league is committed to reducing the environmental impact at each of our events. The NFL strives to not only make each Super Bowl more sustainable than the last but to also leave a lasting "green legacy" in the host's community.

What you can do:

There are simple steps you can take to help make Super Bowl LIX more sustainable!

Help us reduce waste

  • Ensure recyclables are empty, clean, and dry – no foods or liquids remaining.
  • Keep plastic bags and wraps out of recycling.
  • Talk with our on-site sustainability staff if you have any questions or want to learn more.

Travel sustainably

  • Walk when you can – New Orleans is a beautiful city for walking, and it's also great for your health and the environment.
  • Utilize public transport – avoid congestion by taking a ride on RTA.
  • Consider an EV rideshare, which is often about the same price as a standard ride.

What the NFL is doing:

In collaboration with the New Orleans Super Bowl Host Committee, the NFL is:

Donating materials and food:

The NFL helps reusable materials find a second life after Super Bowl LIX.

  • 20+ Donation Organizations: Over 20 local organizations, from food banks to schools, will repurpose Super Bowl items.
  • Tons of donations: Last year's donations totaled over $300,000 in food and materials, with expectations to exceed that in New Orleans, including thousands of pounds of food and building materials.

Improving recycling:

The NFL is ramping up recycling efforts, both for fans and behind the scenes.

  • Extra bins: 200 additional recycling bins and sustainability staff to assist fans are placed throughout venues for Super Bowl LIX.
  • Added sorting behind the scenes: Behind the scenes, the NFL is sorting through recycling bags, to minimize contamination and maximize the bottles and cans that are recycled.

Hosting Zero Waste events:

The NFL will showcase material recovery and recycling efforts through two Zero Waste events.

  • Two Zero Waste events: The Commissioner's Party and NFL House, are expected to be zero-waste, meaning 90%+ of waste accumulated will be diverted from landfills.
  • Eye towards the future: The NFL is also monitoring the diversion rates for other Super Bowl Week events and on gameday, with the goal to increase zero-waste events next year.

Tracking and reducing carbon:

The NFL is measuring and working to reduce its carbon footprint at Super Bowl LIX.

  • Carbon Tracking: Emissions from energy use, travel, and food & merchandise are being measured to plan future reductions.
  • Zero-Emission Energy: Entergy is providing renewable energy in New Orleans on Super Bowl Sunday and surrounding event days.

Looking beyond Super Bowl LIX:

The NFL aims to leave a lasting "green legacy" in New Orleans.

  • Recycling for coastal restoration: Glass recycled on gameday will be used to create sand for coastal restoration in Southern Louisiana. This will add to the efforts of NFL Green to restore coastal restoration through collecting and repurposing 59 tons of Oyster shells to fight coastal erosion.
  • New Recycling Protocols at Caesar's Superdome: The NFL is helping Caesar's Superdome implement new recycling procedures, which can be used for future events.
