Lions re-sign Smith; RB back with team for fifth season

The Detroit Lions have re-signed Kevin Smith to a one-year deal, the team announced Tuesday on its official website.

The Lions took a flier on Smith during the 2011 season after injuries to Jahvid Best and Mikel Leshoure depleted their depth at running back. Smith rushed for 356 yards and four touchdowns in seven games, including a career-high 140 yards andthree touchdowns in a November win over Carolina

"Thanks for all the support from family, friends, fans feels good to be back in Detroit,"Smith wrote Tuesday on Twitter . "I'm glad the organization feels I can help this team take the next step. Look forward to the next step in my career. Be blessed people thanks again."

Detroit selected the Central Florida star in the third round of the 2008 draft and he ran for nearly 1,000 yards as a rookie. Injuries over the next two seasons prevented him from matching that production.
