Alabama DE Jonathan Allen falls to Redskins

Jonathan Allen's draft day fall ends in D.C.

The Washington Redskins made the Alabama defensive lineman the No. 17 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft.

The Bednarik Award winner as the nation's top defensive player immediately upgrades a Redskins defensive front that ranked 24th against the run in 2016. The Redskins are one of two teams to rank bottom five in the NFL in total defense in each of the last two seasons (49ers being the other).

At 6-foot-3, 286-pounds Allen is a stud run defender with positional versatility to play inside and outside along the D-line. He has power and range to be a menace along the line on all three downs. Putting Allen next to Ryan Kerrigan on passing downs will cause problems for offensive lines.

Allen fell from a Top-10 projection in part due to concerns about shoulder tendinitis, but those issues never caused a problem at Alabama, where he registered 22.5 sacks over the past two seasons.
