The Bills know that next month's start to free agency could mean the end of C.J. Spiller's run in Buffalo.
General manager Doug Whaley told reporters at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis that "there's going to be some work that has to be done" if the team's explosive running back signs elsewhere.
Whaley acknowledged that the Bills might look high in the draft for a young back to groom alongside Fred Jackson, Anthony Dixon and Bryce Brown.
"It's deep. It's one of those classes that we're excited about," Whaley said. "In the draft altogether, there's some value in Rounds 2 to 5 that you're going to get some guys who will make an impact in this league."
The presence of run-happy play-caller Greg Roman puts added emphasis on the backfield depth chart. The ageless Jackson turned 34 this week, but we still expect him to see a large workload in 2015. Dixon saw a career-high 105 carries last season, and Brown is an intriguing young option, but the roster could see turnover with new coach Rex Ryan in place.
As for Spiller, we continue to see him as a logical fit for Ryan's old team, the New York Jets. With Chan Gailey operating as Gang Green's new coordinator, reuniting with Spiller -- who piled up 1,700 total yards under Gailey in 2012 -- makes plenty of sense.
