CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Jake Delhomme was the Carolina Panthers' third quarterback for Sunday's game against Tampa Bay due to a strained right elbow, giving backup David Carr his first start with his new team.
Delhomme was injured a week ago against Atlanta and hasn't practiced since, although as the No. 3 QB, he was dressed for the game.
Coach John Fox said last week that Delhomme didn't need surgery, although a team spokesman backed down from the statement Sunday, saying only that surgery isn't planned and Delhomme's status is being evaluated daily.
Carr, a five-year starter in Houston, was signed in the offseason to provide Carolina with a more reliable backup than last year's No. 2 quarterback, Chris Weinke. He led Carolina on two scoring drives in relief of Delhomme in the win over the Falcons.
Matt Moore, a rookie from Oregon State cut by Dallas in the preseason, was listed as Carr's backup against the Buccaneers.
Middle linebacker Dan Morgan (ankle) was on Carolina's inactive list. His backup, Adam Seward (calf), also did not dress. James Anderson replaced him in the starting lineup.
Panthers rookie receiver Dwayne Jarrett was active after not dressing for the first four games.
