Chicago Bears waive Santonio Holmes

The Santonio Holmes experiment is over in Chicago.

The Bears on Tuesday announced that the veteran wide receiver has been waived after nine games with the team that signed him as a free agent in August.

Holmes saw work as a punt returner in Chicago, while his eight catches ranked sixth on the team. Before his lone grab from Jay Cutler in Sunday night's loss to Green Bay, Holmes had accounted for just one reception since Week 3.

Chris Williams makes sense as a candidate to take over punt-returning duties for the rest of Chicago's increasingly ugly season.

As for the 30-year-old Holmes, it wouldn't surprise us to see him latch on elsewhere, but his days as a playmaking wideout loom as a fading speck in the rear-view mirror.
