Forget never having enough depth.
The Dolphins will apparently never have enough speed.
Selected in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL Draft, Jaylen Wright provides yet another blur of a ball-carrier for Miami's electric running back room -- one he's ready to contribute to in whatever capacity.
"Being here with all of these guys, star players, players that I grew up watching, it just means a lot," Wright said during Friday's rookie minicamp, via the team transcript. "Just to be mentioned in the factor of having speed, that just means a lot to me. I'm just blessed to be here, and I'm excited for what's coming for me."
The role coming for Wright will be determined by head coach Mike McDaniel over the coming months.
What's certainly coming for the league is an unrelenting torrent of speed from Miami.
Running back Raheem Mostert just had a career year in his age-31 season with 21 scrimmage touchdowns, while second-year back De'Von Achane blazed his way to 997 total yards and 11 scores on a mere 130 touches.
Together with wide receiver Tyreek Hill, they combined to record six of Next Gen Stats' top-10 maximum speeds by a ball-carrier in 2023.
And now there will be Wright, a Tennessee product with 4.38 speed, to deal with alongside them.
Although Miami's backfield also features Jeff Wilson, Salvon Ahmed and Chris Brooks, Wright's fourth-round pedigree, as well as his mix of size, speed and decisiveness, makes him the ideal third to a Fins' duo that wreaked havoc last season.
"Both of those guys, they are really good guys, great players," Wright said. "I'm excited just to be able to share the rock with them. I'm excited to be that trio that will be out there making a lot of plays this summer, this fall and this season."
Whether his contributions include a heavy workload as the season progresses or only spot chances to flash as a rookie, Wright is confident McDaniel will use him in ways that best accentuate his skills. He saw it in the opportunities the head coach provided Achane in 2023 and during film study he's conducted on Mostert -- who is also of the "more the merrier" mindset -- for several years now.
"It tells me he has a lot of trust in his guys," Wright said regarding McDaniel's faith in Achane during his rookie year. "It tells me when he's drafting somebody, he's doing it for a reason. I feel like I'm somebody that he trusts. I'm ready to prove my point on the field and gain that trust not only from the coaches, but my teammates as well. I'm really excited to make big plays."
Some might wonder if the Dolphins would have been better off investing elsewhere during the fourth round given the already-stellar makeup of their RB room. Many will continue to wonder how Miami divvies up the pie with so many mouths to feed.
Wright won't be among them. He's eager to share and make the most of whatever slice he gets.
"I enjoyed it," he said of a similar timeshare situation in college at Tennessee. "I like to see my other guys eat and get the ball. We're all eating, and I feel like that's going to be the same way here. I feel like whoever gets on the field is going to make big plays. I like it. … Three backs, three great backs, I feel like that's really good to have."
