Injury roundup: Ben Tate back at Browns practice

Ben Tate returned to the practice field Tuesday as the Cleveland Browns came off their bye week.

It's the running back's first practice since spraining his right knee in Week 1, according to the Akron Beacon Journal. Tate's return is a good indication he'll be able to play Sunday against the Tennessee Titans.

The Browns signed Tate to a two-year, $6.2 million contract in the offseason to carry the load.

Running backs coach Wilbert Montgomery said last week he expects Tate to regain his starting job upon his return, despite the sterling play of rookie running backs Terrance West (204 yards on 47 carries, 4.3 average, two touchdowns) and Isaiah Crowell (141 yards on 27 carries, 5.2 average, three touchdowns).

Some other Tuesday injury news:

»Bruce Carter's quadriceps injury won't keep the linebacker out a significant amount of time, which is great news for a Dallas Cowboys defense already riddled by injury. He is not expected to play this week, however.

»Redskins tight end Niles Paul did not practice Tuesday and remains in concussion protocol after taking a brutal shot last Thursday night. "He's making very good progress," coach Jay Gruden said of Paul. Offensive tackle Trent Williams and guard Shawn Lauvao were also held out.

» On the positive side for Washington, tight end Jordan Reed (hamstring) participated in individual drills. Reed, who has missed the last two weeks, had been doing only side work with other rehabbing players.

»A rough season for the Atlanta Falcons' offensive line got worse Tuesday. The team place starting center Joe Hawley (knee) and right tackle Lamar Holmes (foot) on injured reserve, ending their seasons. The Falcons announced they will promote guard Harland Gunn from the practice squad. The Falcons also worked out center/guard Leroy Harris on Tuesday, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reports.

»More bad news for Atlanta. The team placed safety William Moore on injured reserve with a designation to return. Moore will be eligible to return to the field in eight weeks. The Falcons promoted safety Sean Baker from the practice squad.

»Green Bay Packers receiver Jarrett Boykin (knee, groin) missed Tuesday's practice. The wideout could be out his second straight game with a short week before Thursday's game against the Minnesota Vikings

»Texans rookie Jadeveon Clowney told reporters he recently started jogging in his rehabilitation and hopes to return in a "few weeks".
