While teams calculate and execute coaching changes around the NFL, Jim Caldwell is waiting for his future in Indianapolis to be determined. And for the immediate future, Caldwell will remain the coach of the Colts.
What's next for Colts?
What does the surprising house-cleaning by Colts owner Jim Irsay mean
for the future of Peyton Manning in Indy? Our analysts debate. **More ...**
On the same day Colts owner Jim Irsay fired vice chairman Bill Polian and general manager Chris Polian, he announced during a news conference that Caldwell will remain in place and it's "not out of the realm of possibilities" for the coach to return next season.
"Right now, that's still under evaluation," Irsay said of Caldwell's future. "This is something that will be a more extensive search. It will take more time. At the same time, I anticipate the general manger being here when I make a final decision on the coaching staff and head coach."
While Irsay said he anticipates hiring the new GM before deciding Caldwell's fate, he added the caveat that he won't commit to any direction on the coaching search or rule out any scenario.
"He was very excited and he understood," Irsay said of Caldwell.
The Colts finished 2-14 in Caldwell's third season in Indy. He said he met with Irsay on Sunday night, and added he's "moving forward" with his duties until he's told otherwise.
"Love it, looking forward to it. Plain and simple," Caldwell succinctly said about the opportunity to return.
Irsay will begin the search for a new GM immediately, although he said he hasn't talked to any teams or any candidates. Until then, Caldwell acknowledged his job status is stuck in limbo.
"In this league, it's always a great challenge," Caldwell said. "You lose as many games as we lost in a year, there's a problem. There's an issue."
