Jaguars poach veteran LB Session from AFC South rival Colts

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Jaguars are doing all they can to revamp a porous defense.

One day after acquiring former Buffalo Bills linebacker Paul Posluszny, the Jaguars added former Indianapolis Colts linebacker Clint Session. The two free agents could help coach Jack Del Rio turn around a unit that ranked near the bottom of the NFL in every defensive category last season.

"I think Jacksonville is making a statement on defense, and when you sign Posluszny and Clint and you have Daryl Smith, I think you've got one of the strongest linebacking corps in the league," said Session's agent, Harold Lewis.

Lewis said his client agreed to a five-year deal worth slightly more than $29 million. He said the deal includes $11.5 million guaranteed. Free agents cannot officially sign contracts until Friday.

The decision to let Session go came as no surprise, given the Colts' recent history. Indianapolis has let linebackers Mike Peterson, Marcus Washington, Cato June and David Thornton leave as free agents over the past decade. Peterson moved on to become a staple in the middle of Del Rio's defenses from 2003 to 2008. The Jaguars can only hope Session finds similar success in Jacksonville.

Lewis said Session chose Jacksonville because it puts him close to home (he's from South Florida), lets him play mostly on grass and keeps him in the familiar AFC South -- and provides him two games annually against the Colts.

"I'd be lying if I told you he wasn't looking forward to it," Lewis said. "Anytime you go to another city and you come back and play the guys you grew up with, you want to prove that they made a mistake. It's not for revenge, he loved it out there. He just wants to show them they made a mistake by letting him go."

Session had nearly 300 tackles in four seasons with the Colts. He missed most of last season because of an elbow injury, but he has been productive throughout his career.

"I've represented a lot of linebackers, good linebackers, over the years and he's the hardest hitting, one-minded guy I've ever had out there," Lewis said. "He's a human missile."
