Lions, RB David Montgomery agree to a two-year contract extension worth $18.25 million

The Detroit Lions are keeping one of their top offensive playmakers for the long haul.

Running back David Montgomery has agreed to terms on a two-year contract extension worth $18.25 million with $10.5 million additionally guaranteed, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported on Saturday, per sources.

Montgomery's new deal has him under contract through the 2027 season.

The team later announced Montgomery's signing.

Selected No. 73 overall in the 2019 NFL Draft, Montgomery has been a sturdy running back since joining the league, racking up 1,197 carries for 4,895 yards and 43 touchdowns over his six-year career. Montgomery spent his first four seasons with the Chicago Bears and set a career-best 1,070 rushing yards in 2020.

Montgomery, 27, joined the Lions in 2023 as an unrestricted free agent. In his first season with the Lions, the veteran RB had 282 carries for 1,286 yards and 17 touchdowns, including 25 receptions for 211 yards in 18 games.

Detroit paired Montgomery with 2023 first-round draft pick Jahmyr Gibbs. In Gibbs' rookie campaign, the No. 12 overall pick recorded 182 carries for 945 yards, including 52 receptions for 316 yards and 11 total touchdowns. The RB duo helped Detroit reach the NFC Championship Game for the first time since 1991.

To start the 2024 season, Montgomery has 63 carries for 271 yards and four touchdowns in four games.

Coming off the bye week, Montgomery and Co. kick off against the Dallas Cowboys at 4:25 p.m. ET on Sunday.
