Another long-tenured veteran player became a salary cap casualty on Tuesday.
The New York Giants released defensive end Mathias Kiwanuka, the team announced.
The 31-year-old Kiwanuka has spent his entire nine-year NFL career with Big Blue and was part of two Super Bowl championships.
The starting defensive end was placed on injured reserve after 11 games in 2014, earning 28 tackles and 2.5 sacks in 558 snaps. Kiwanuka's play dropped off this season even before the knee injury ended his season.
The Giants will save $4.825 million on the salary cap by cutting Kiwanuka. The defensive end indignantly accepted a pay cut in 2013 to stay in New York. This time he wasn't so lucky.
