Niners HC Kyle Shanahan: WR Deebo Samuel hospitalized with pneumonia, fluid in his lungs

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel is dealing with a "pneumonia-like" illness and has been hospitalized due to the fluid in his lungs, head coach Kyle Shanahan announced Monday.

Shanahan added that at this time there is no return timeline for Samuel, who currently remains in the hospital.

Samuel was struggling to breathe on Sunday, according to Shanahan, which explained his early exit from the Niners' loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. Shanahan added that Samuel's illness got worse following the game, leading to his hospital stay.

Samuel's ailment is unfortunate news for a San Francisco team that learned it won't have WR Brandon Aiyuk for the remainder of the season due to a torn ACL and MCL he suffered on Sunday, an injury confirmed by Shanahan on Monday.

In six games played this season, Samuel has produced 20 receptions for 335 yards and 51 rushing yards with a total of two touchdowns (one receiving, one rushing).
