Orlando Scandrick is set to join Dallas Cowboys teammates for voluntary workouts for the first time this offseason.
NFL Media's Albert Breer reported Sunday that Scandrick will report to Valley Ranch on Monday, a sign of progress toward a new deal. ESPN's Todd Archer first reported the news.
Scandrick had been staying away from the team facility since workouts opened April 20. The cornerback wants a news contract, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported last month.
The Cowboys' best corner is set to make $1.5 million in 2015, which his third-most on the team at his position (Brandon Carr, $8 million; Morris Claiborne, $2.6 million).
Scandrick and his agent met with the Cowboys brass last week and the sides are optimistic a deal can be worked out.
"We stand strong about what a good player he is, how much we need him, how much he helps us," Jerry Jones said Wednesday. "(We) would like to get something satisfactory worked out with him. The last time we he asked for the agreement that he has now, he came in and asked for us to look at the agreement and make a change and we did. So we'll talk about the one we changed for him last time. Hopefully we can get something worked out that has the best interest for the Cowboys and also accommodate what he needs to do... We didn't get anything done (yet), but we're certainly are talking about it."
Attending voluntary workouts is a good-faith step on the corner's part.
Scandrick signed a six-year, $28.2 million deal in 2011 that included $10 million guaranteed and a $3 million signing bonus. The deal was reworked in 2013. Scandrick is due $3 million each season from 2016 to 2018.
The Cowboys are currently in Phase 2 of workouts, OTAs start May 26 and mandatory minicamp takes place June 16 to 18.
