The Carolina Panthers hired John Matsko as offensive line coach Thursday, one day after he was fired by the Baltimore Ravens.
Matsko became the second offense assistant hired by new coach Ron Rivera, joining coordinator Rob Chudzinski.
Matsko won a Super Bowl ring as offensive line coach with the St. Louis Rams. He then went to the Kansas City Chiefs before moving to Baltimore, where he spent the past three years.
Matsko was let go Wednesday after the Ravens struggled to protect quarterback Joe Flacco, who was sacked nine times in two playoff games.
Matsko, a 59-year-old Cleveland native, played at Kent State before coaching at several colleges, including North Carolina, before moving to the NFL.
Carolina's line features Pro Bowl left tackle Jordan Gross.
The Herald in Rock Hill, S.C., also reported Thursday that former University of Alabama coach and current NFL assistant Mike Shula interviewed for one of the vacancies on the Panthers' offensive staff, according to a league source.
Shula, who has been the Jacksonville Jaguars' quarterbacks coach since 2007, also has worked for the Miami Dolphins, Chicago Bears and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Jay Gruden, younger brother of former Oakland Raiders and Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Jon Gruden, interviewed for the offensive coordinator post given to Chudzinski, The Herald reported.
