Panthers owner likes Newton to be without tattoos, earrings

Cam Newton doesn't have any tattoos on his body, and his ears are unpierced. In an American sports landscape filled with players with extensive ink and diamond studs, he can be viewed as an exception.

Inked-up coaches

Newton's clean-cut look pleases Jerry Richardson. When the Carolina Panthers owner hosted Newton at his home before April's NFL draft, he made a point to ask the young quarterback if he had any tattoos or piercings.

After Carolina drafted the former Auburn star with the No. 1 pick, Richardson, 77, also made a point to do a new body-art check with the new face of his franchise.

"Did you get crazy after the draft and go out and get any tattoos or piercings?" Richardson asked, according to an April story in The Charlotte Observer. "Do I have to check you for anything?"

"No sir," Newton said.

Richardson repeated details of the exchange this week in an interview on the PBS program "Charlie Rose."
