Phillips back with Texans, could coach from press box in finale

Houston Texans defensive coordinator Wade Phillips is back in action.

Phillips returned to work Monday, 11 days after undergoing surgery on his kidney and gallbladder. The 64-year-old Phillips was on a medical leave of absence.

Texans coach Gary Kubiak told reporters that Phillips was at work for a couple of hours and met with players to go over game tape of the Texans’ Week 16 loss to the Indianapolis Colts, according to the team.

The Texans (10-5) face the Tennessee Titans in the season-finale.

"The goal would be that he would be (coaching) in the press box on Sunday, but we'll see how he feels," Kubiak said. "It's good for everybody just to know that he's doing better and back to full health. It's good for him to be back around the players a little bit."

The Texans rank second the league in total defense (280.7 yards per game) and fourth in scoring defense (17.0 points per game) under the guidance of Phillips, who was hired in January.
