The Philadelphia Eagles announced that former offensive lineman Woody Peoples died Tuesday night in his hometown of Birmingham, Ala. He was 67.
A member of the Eagles' 1980 NFC championship team, Peoples played in 168 career games in the NFL with the Eagles and San Francisco 49ers from 1968 to 1980. After playing 10 seasons for the 49ers, he finished his career by playing three seasons and in 47 games for the Eagles from 1978 to 1980. He earned Pro Bowl honors with the 49ers twice (after the 1972 and '73 seasons) and also was a starting guard for the Eagles in Super Bowl XV.
Peoples originally was signed by the 49ers as a free agent from Grambling State, where he earned his degree in business administration and played under legendary coach Eddie Robinson. Peoples played one season of semi-pro football with the Richmond Rebels of the Continental League in 1965 and spent two years in the Army before joining the 49ers in 1968. Peoples signed with the Eagles as a free agent during the 1978 preseason and won the starting right guard job.
