Redskins to add CB Buchanon to active roster after suspension

The Washington Redskins will add cornerback Phillip Buchanon to their active roster after his four-game suspension ends Monday, coach Mike Shanahantold The Free Lance-Star on Saturday.

Buchanon was suspended Sept. 2 for violating the NFL's policy on performing-enhancing substances. He played in only one preseason game, the finale against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but left in the second quarter with a right shoulder injury.

"When he left here, he was a little banged up," Redskins coach Mike Shanahan told the newspaper, "so we're going to see how he is with that shoulder and see what type of conditioning he's in and then make a decision on which direction we're going to go."

Buchanon, who's in his ninth NFL season, re-signed with the Redskins after the NFL lockout ended in late July. He's expected to be the team's third cornerback. In Buchanon's absence, that role has been filled by Kevin Barnes, who has recorded six tackles and one interception.
