Vernon Davis dropped critical passes each of the past two weeks, both Denver Broncos losses.
Ahead of Monday night's pivotal matchup with the Cincinnati Bengals, Davis took ownership of his struggles and the part he played in the two-game skid.
"I'm thinking about the actual play rather than taking care of my assignment," Davis said this week, via the Denver Post. "Sometimes it shows, maybe when I drop a ball or something. I'm steady thinking about the process instead of focusing on the outcome."
Last week, with the score tied 27-27 in the fourth quarter, Davis dropped a Brock Osweiler pass down the seam that would have been a first down. The Steelerswon by a touchdown.
More egregious was Davis' drop two weeks in a 15-12 loss to the Raiders. A fourth-down pass with under four minutes remaining in the contest should have gotten the Broncos near field-goal range. Instead, the drop forced a punt and Denver never got close to tying the score.
Davis, who was acquired in a trade with the San Francisco 49ers in early November, said learning the new offense has been a struggle.
"It's been tough. I'm not going to lie to you, it's been tough," Davis said. "Whenever you run into things that might be a struggle or don't go your way, it's just an obstacle. The best players and greatest players, they keep on going."
With tight ends a staple of Gary Kubiak's offense, there was a thought that Davis could have a big impact when acquired. That hasn't happened. In seven games in Denver, Davis has just 20 receptions for 201 yards and zero touchdowns -- over that same span Owen Daniels has 23 catches for 303 yards and one score.
