Williams informed both teams of his decision.

Williams served as defensive coordinator for recently hired Rams coach Jeff Fisher with the Tennessee Titans from 1997 to 2000.

The Titans finished with the No. 1 defense in 2000, leading the Buffalo Bills to hire Williams as coach in 2001. Williams compiled a 17-31 record before the team fired him at the end of the 2003 season.

Former Jacksonville Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio could be a candidate to replace Williams in New Orleans.

Williams joined the Saints in 2009 after stints with the Jaguars and Washington Redskins and won a Super Bowl with the Saints in his first season.

The Saints finished with the No. 24-ranked defense in 2011.
