2018 NFL Draft facts
The 2018 NFL Draft is just around the corner and everyone is getting ready for Dallas. Take a look through these draft stats before the first name is called.

The Giants hold the second overall pick and the Jets have the third overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. Should both teams keep those picks, it would mark the fourth time in the Common Draft Era (since 1967) that both New York teams picked in the Top 5. In 1977, the Jets took tackle Marvin Powell fourth overall, followed by the Giants selecting defensive tackle Gary Jeter fifth. In 1981, the Giants selected linebacker Lawrence Taylor second overall, while the Jets nabbed running back Freeman McNeil third. And in 1996, the Jets used the No. 1 overall pick on wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson, with the Giants taking defensive end Cedric Jones fifth.

The Browns selected defensive end Myles Garrett first overall in the 2017 NFL Draft, and now have the top pick again in 2018. Cleveland would be the fifth team in the Common Draft Era (since 1967) to have the No. 1 pick in back-to-back drafts, and the first such team since the Browns in 1999 and 2000 (QB Tim Couch and DE Courtney Brown). The Browns also hold the fourth overall pick. If they keep both picks, they would be the fifth team in the Common Draft Era (since 1967) and the first team since the 2000 Redskins (LB LaVar Arrington, T Chris Samuels) to select two players in the Top 5 of the same draft. The Browns' five picks in the first two rounds would tie for the most such selections made by a team in a single draft (six occurrences, most recently by the 2009 Broncos).

The Patriots have four of the top 63 picks in the 2018 NFL Draft, tied for the most top 65 picks the team has had in the Bill Belichick era (since 2000). The last time the Patriots had four top 65 picks was in 2010, when the team used two of those choices on safety Devin McCourty and tight end Rob Gronkowski.

Quarterbacks could go with each of the first three picks in 2018, which would be just the third such occurrence in the Common Draft Era (since 1967). In 1971, Jim Plunkett, Archie Manning and Dan Pastorini were the first three selections, and in 1999 the first three picks were Tim Couch, Donovan McNabb and Akili Smith. The 2018 quarterback class could also be the first in the Common Draft Era to feature at least four quarterbacks in the Top 10 picks.

Will Josh Rosen be the next Top 5 pick from UCLA? Five Bruins have been selected in the Top 5 in the Common Draft Era (since 1967). All five of them went on to make multiple Pro Bowls, and three of them – quarterback Troy Aikman, offensive tackle Jonathan Ogden and safety Kenny Easley – are in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Sam Darnold's turnovers have been mentioned as a possible red flag, but he's hardly the first quarterback to enter the NFL with ball security concerns. Among the quarterbacks with more interceptions than Darnold (13) in their final college season: Deshaun Watson (17), Jameis Winston (18) and Matt Ryan (19).

Over the last 15 seasons, Baker Mayfield's 9.8 yards per pass attempt is the most of any FBS quarterback with at least 850 career pass attempts. Oklahoma State's Mason Rudolph ranks second at 9.4 yards/attempt. The top six is rounded out by four former first-round picks: Sam Bradford, Jameis Winston, Tim Tebow and Marcus Mariota.

Quarterback Lamar Jackson had 4,132 rushing yards over three seasons at Louisville. Since 2009, 15 running backs have been selected in the first round of the NFL Draft, and 14 of them had fewer rushing yards in college than Jackson (Melvin Gordon is the lone exception).

Saquon Barkley could be the third running back to be selected in the Top 5 in the last three drafts, joining Leonard Fournette in 2017 and Ezekiel Elliott in 2016. The last time a running back was selected in the Top 5 in three consecutive years was 1999-2001 (1999: Edgerrin James and Ricky Williams, 2000: Jamal Lewis, 2001: LaDainian Tomlinson). All four of those running backs won a rushing title in their career, as did Elliott in 2016.

Who is this year's Alvin Kamara? Georgia's Sony Michel looks like a Kamara clone. Michel measured 5'10 5/8", weighed 214 pounds, ran a 4.54 40-yard dash and had 22 bench press reps at the 2018 Combine. Kamara measured 5'10 1/4", weighed 214 pounds, ran 4.56 and also had 22 bench press reps at the 2017 Combine. On top of the physical similarities, both Michel and Kamara averaged 6.2 yards per carry in college.

Good news for teams interested in Alabama wide receiver Calvin Ridley and/or Texas A&M wide receiver Christian Kirk. Since 2010, five SEC wide receivers have been selected in the Top 20. All five – A.J. Green, Julio Jones, Odell Beckham Jr., Mike Evans and Amari Cooper – have blossomed into Pro Bowlers.

North Carolina State pass rusher Bradley Chubb broke Mario Williams' school record for career sacks (Chubb: 26.0, Williams: 25.5) and could be the highest drafted player from NC State since Williams was the No. 1 overall pick by the Texans in 2006. All four NC State players selected in the Top 10 over the last 20 drafts became Pro Bowlers: Williams (4 Pro Bowl selections), Philip Rivers (7), Koren Robinson (1) and Torry Holt (7).

Alabama defensive back Minkah Fitzpatrick became the third player in college football history to win both the Jim Thorpe Award (nation's best defensive back) and the Chuck Bednarik Award (nation's best defender). That bodes well for his NFL future, as the two previous players to win both awards are nine-time Pro Bowler Charles Woodson and seven-time Pro Bowler Patrick Peterson, both of whom were Top 5 picks.

If Ohio State cornerback Denzel Ward is selected in the first round, it would mark three straight years a Buckeyes cornerback went in the first round (2017: Marshon Lattimore and Gareon Conley, 2016: Eli Apple). Ohio State would be the first school with a cornerback selected in the first round in three straight drafts since... Ohio State from 1999-2001 (Antoine Winfield, Ahmed Plummer & Nate Clements).

Based purely on combine measurables, Wyoming quarterback Josh Allen is almost identical to Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz. They were the exact same weight (237 lbs) and separated by less than half an inch in height (Allen 6'4 7/8", Wentz 6'5 1/4"), 1/8 of an inch in hand size (Allen 10 1/8", Wentz 10") and two one-hundreds of a second in the 40-yard dash (Allen 4.75, Wentz 4.77).

Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield measured in a 6'0 5/8" at the 2018 Combine. Only one quarterback shorter than 6'1" has been selected in the first round of the last 15 drafts: Johnny Manziel (5'11 3/4" in 2014).

How good was Penn State running back Saquon Barkley at the 2018 Scouting Combine? He was stronger than Joe Thomas (Barkley: 29 bench reps, Thomas: 28), quicker than DeSean Jackson (Barkley: 1.47 seconds in 10-yard split, Jackson: 1.55), faster than Devin Hester (Barkley: 4.40 seconds in 40-yard dash, Hester: 4.43) and jumped higher than Julio Jones (Barkley: 41" vertical jump, Jones: 38 1/2").

UCF linebacker Shaquem Griffin (who had his left hand amputated at age four) ran the fastest 40-yard dash of any linebacker at the combine since at least 2003 (4.38 seconds). Griffin's time was also the fastest by any defensive player weighing 225-plus pounds at the combine since at least 2003.
