'Hard Knocks': Bears HC Matt Eberflus sees Caleb Williams rising 'to the occasion' in camp

Hard Knocks: Training Camp with the Chicago Bears airs every Tuesday at 9 p.m. ET through Sept. 3 on HBO and is available to stream on Max.

The Bears are beginning a new era of Chicago football.

In the first episode of Hard Knocks: Training Camp with the Chicago Bears on Tuesday night, 2024 NFL Draft No. 1 overall pick Caleb Williams is dealing with ups and downs just like any other rookie, but he's taking on every obstacle, much to the appreciation of his head coach.

"He's accepted every challenge and he's risen to the occasion," Eberflus said on the season premiere.

It's clear Eberflus is doing his best to ensure Williams is developed under the right practice settings and has seen improvement throughout camp.

"I changed the setup because of you, you know, to make sure you're getting the reps," Eberflus says to Williams in a one-on-one meeting. "You've made leaps and bounds in seven practices which is great."

Constant improvement is what the team is looking for and with much of the franchise's future riding on Williams' performance, general manager Ryan Poles has done his part to help Williams succeed.

Poles made it a priority this offseason to address the offensive woes by adding new weapons D'Andre Swift, Keenan Allen and Gerald Everett, and beefing up the team's offensive line depth by adding Coleman Shelton, Ryan Bates and Matt Pryor.

There's a lot at stake for the Bears this season, but the team has never had a quarterback like Williams at the helm -- or so Chicago hopes. The offseason hype that has surrounded Williams has been supported by his progression so far as the USC product appears to be headed in the right direction as Hard Knocks gets underway.
