Patriots QB Drake Maye suffers concussion in win over Jets

New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye did not return to Sunday's 25-22 win over the Jets after exiting in the first half with a concussion.

Maye went to the locker room while the Patriots offense was off the field early in the second quarter. During the previous drive, which ended in a Patriots punt, Maye was slow to get up following an 18-yard scramble nearing then end of the first quarter.

The rookie remained in the game after his first-down run, handing the ball off twice (first of which negated by a penalty), taking a sack and throwing an incompletion on third down before the Patriots punted the ball away.

Maye was initially deemed questionable to return before the first-year QB was ruled out.

"The competitor that he is, obviously he wanted to go back out there and play, but there's a protocol that he has to go through," Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo told reporters after the game. "Again, can't wait to get him back."

Jacoby Brissett entered the game for Maye on the Patriots' next possession midway through the second quarter. The Jets held a 13-7 lead when the Patriots offense ran on the field sans Maye for the first time on Sunday. Brissett finished 15-of-24 for 132 yards, with three rushes for 11 yards, in leading New England to an upset victory.

Maye opened Sunday's scoring in Foxborough with a 17-yard touchdown run to conclude New England's second drive of the game. He was 3-of-6 passing for 23 yards and produced 46 rushing yards before his early exit.

The Patriots (2-6) play at the Tennessee Titans next week.
